Colic in Babies - Symptoms and Treatment

Colic is difficult for parents because there is no discernible cause and very little that can be done about it besides trying different remedies by trial and error. A colicky baby can be difficult on the nerves of parents as well as make them feel like they aren’t doing everything they can to make their baby comfortable. Fortunately, colic rarely lasts longer than a few months.

Colic symptoms exist in about 20% of newborn babies. Most babies who have colic develop it between two and four weeks old. The symptoms usually reach their peak around six to eight weeks and then gradually subside between 12 and 16 weeks of age. Sometimes symptoms can persist until the baby is as old as six months, but these cases are rare (less than 10%) and usually much less severe by the time they reach that age.

If your baby seems to be developing colic, it is important not to assume that it is colic and just start looking for home remedies or waiting for the symptoms to subside. Many times what appears to be colic actually has a medical explanation and can be treated medically. Bring your baby to the pediatrician. Once the pediatrician has ruled out any medical cause for the crying, he or she will probably diagnose your baby with colic. Some parents use anti colic bottles to reduce the gas in babies and to certain extent this is helpful in reducing the colic in babies.

Because almost all explanations for colic are related to a baby becoming more accustomed to its own body and its surroundings, colic should begin to subside gradually but consistently. For instance, some colic is believed to be related to an undeveloped digestive system. Some is believed to be caused by over-stimulation in a new environment. In both cases, the baby will adjust to these difficulties; its digestive system will get stronger or it will learn to process more stimuli.

If your baby’s colic lasts beyond six months of age, you should consult your pediatrician again. Some medical causes of crying can be difficult to diagnose in a very young infant. Possible causes range from chronic ear infections to allergies to food that you didn’t eliminate from your diet to urinary tract infections.  The important thing to remember during episodes of colic is that it is normal and that it is temporary. Parents of colicky babies must be patient and simply do everything they can to make their child comfortable. It’s important not to get frustrated at your baby; after all, if you couldn’t talk how would you communicate your discomfort? Just keep reminding yourself that the colic will subside eventually. It won’t last forever.

What is Colic?

Just what is Colic and does your baby have it? If it is any comfort, Colic is diagnose by doctors as a symptom and not  a disease. But as a parent, specially a new one, it does little for comfort when that bundle of joy came into your life, the last thing on your mind was that non stop crying and the sleepless night trying to figure out how to change it. So, what is colic and if your baby is colic what can you do about it?  First things first, colic babies are 1 in 5 and usually last for the first 1 to 3 months after which majority of babies out grow it. The normal symptoms of colic are continuous crying with at times flexing and extending their legs. At time clenching fists and distended tummy.

And although this can happen at any time, it most often occurs in the late afternoons or early evenings. If you feel that your baby is colic then you need to try to identify the cause. One of the main reasons for colic issues  is gas in the infant and this can come from the mother’s milk.  Make a note of what you are eating and try and avoid some the following foods as there are known to create access amount of gas in the stomach.

To name a few:
Fruits – Honey dues, Apples, Watermelons, Bananas and dried fruits.
Fiber – Oatmeal and other grains
Vegetables – Bell pepper, Cabbages, Cucumbers, Onions, Radishes.
Sugar – Carbonated drinks and Sodas
To find a more complete list, Google “ Foods that cause gas”.

Try not to over feed your infant and pat them more frequently.  If you are feeding formula, then talk to your doctor and change the formula. The other reason that the experts associate this problem with babies is with stress in the home.  Doctors believe that infants can sense stress in the beings around them and that too can cause discomfort in the infant resulting in colic behavior.  As hard as it may seem with all that is going on in your life, you need to take a break from your environment. Try getting  a family member to babysit for 30 minutes or so.

The most  important thing you need to keep In mind is that this in not life threatening and it will pass, and that before you know it in a few months this crying bundle will be a toddler getting into lot more mischief then you can imagine.

Solution for Colic Baby

In the eyes of some experts, milk is a major component.  Because milk is associated with several allergies and taking the sensitive nature of a new born, they feel that milk may cause the infant to become Colic.  The other product that is recommended by them is called Probiotics.  This is taken internally and is a form of bacteria that helps with the babies digestive system.

Now although Probiotics forms naturally in the mothers milk, formula milk is different.
The method we highly recommend is shown in the video on this page which if you have not seen, do so.  If you are asking “ What is Colic” then you are obviously concerned with your infants behavior and this is one method you guaranteed to have results. This method is called the “ Baby Bowen” technique. It is Simple, Natural and you see results immediately.

If you have tried everything and yet nothing seems to work then you definitely need to look into this.
It is not a massage or manipulation but rather a method for re-balancing the nervous system.  Understand that beside the mother, the whole birth process  has been an extremely traumatic experience for the baby and by r-ebalancing the nervous system , re-balancing you create the immediate effects of calmness and serenity in your baby and the causes of discomfort fades  away. The result is a happy, healthy and balanced baby.

This method works for any symptoms associated with Colic, from Wind, Gas, Bloating, Reflux, Constipation, Indigestion, Hiccups, Restlessness, Difficulty Sleeping etc.  The list goes on.
Now before the cynical voice in your head starts ringing the alarm bells and shouting “ Yeah right”,  let me ask you, what is the worst that can happen?  Other than a little time, you or the baby have lost nothing because the cost for the information is guaranteed, meaning if this does not work, you get your money back.  But ask, what if it does work, then what is it worth?

Colic Baby Symptoms

Colic in baby usually appears in the first 2 to 4 weeks since baby is born and it attends its peak at about 6-8 weeks. In most cases colic becomes worse in evening or at night. Here are some of the symptoms of colic in new born babies

  • Frowning and grimacing
  • Face becomes red
  • Stomach pain
  • Loud and long screaming fits
  • Rumbling of tummy
  • The baby cries lot and are not able to consoled
  • The infant passes wind or faeces around the time the crying stops, which could be coincidental
Changing the diet of a baby is only of proven benefit for colic if the baby has lactose intolerance or cow’s milk allergies. Remember, there are many things that can seem like colic but aren’t. There isn't a clear definition of exactly what colic is or how (and if) it differs from other types of crying. Colic is somewhat subjective, and whether your baby's crying is "average" or "excessive" may depend on how much you can endure. Removing the substances from both the baby’s and the mother’s diet may be helpful.

If you're concerned about your baby, your doctor can do a full exam to rule out a medical cause for why your baby cries and is fussy. But doctors typically agree that the difference between colic and ordinary crying in that baby seems inconsolable, crying turns to screaming, and the ordeal lasts for at least three hours and sometimes much longer (occasionally nearly around the clock, much to the tired and fraught parents' dismay). Most often, colicky periods recur daily, though some babies take an occasional night off. But pediatricians generally use the "rule of threes" to determine colic: crying bouts that start when a baby is about 3 weeks old (usually late in the day, although they can occur anytime), lasting for more than three hours a day, on more than three days a week, for more than three weeks in a row. This should only be done with help from a doctor, to ensure the nutritional needs of both mother and baby are met. If you’re a breastfeeding mama, you also want to give up foods that can trigger baby colic symptoms.

What to do About Newborns with Colic
While there is no scientifically proven cause for colic most experts point to gastrointestinal discomfort as the likely trigger. It typically peaks at 6 to 8 weeks and subsides by 3 to 4 months. Your baby is restless and cranky, and doesn’t seem to settle into a predictable routine of sleeping and feeding. Dairy is a huge culprit. In fact the word colic is derived from the ancient Greek word pronounced "kōlon" meaning intestine.

The cause of colic is unknown. Many parents find this unpredictability very hard to cope with. So are other common allergens like wheat/gluten, eggs, shellfish, citrus, caffeine and spicy foods. If babies could talk and tell us the precise location and nature of their discomfort the medical community would have a much more definitive understanding this condition. Researchers have explored a number of possibilities, including allergies, lactose intolerance, changes in the normal bacteria found in the digestive system, a digestive system that hasn't fully developed, anxious parents, and differences in the way a baby is fed or comforted.

Your baby might feed hungrily, but soon after a feed seems to be hungry again. While it’s certainly no fun to give up some of your favorite foods, it’s worth your effort. There are at least nine theories proposed to explain the source of colic, but because colic has no precisely defined cause, but rather is a collection of different symptoms, it is quite likely that colic may be due to different factors in different babies. Yet it's still unclear why some babies have colic and others don't. Or your baby might not feed well, often fussing at the breast or bottle.

You might find that your baby spends long periods unsettled or grizzling, but might also cry very loudly. During this crying period, your baby might draw her legs up, as if in pain. It’s very difficult to settle or comfort your baby when she’s in this state. She might be inconsolable – nothing you do seems to make any difference.

Baby High Chairs in UK - 2016 Buying Guide

High chairs for babies are important part of your little babies room, so as a dutiful parent, you  should know about the kinds of high chairs that are available in UK. There are some important and essential factors that one must keep in mind before purchasing this item. High chairs for babies come in a large number of types, styles and design, which will suit their purpose of being a baby’s throne.

They are also available in UK in a wide range of colors to meet the different coordination needs of both child and parents. The important and key factors that You should look for are safety and durability, how easy it is to clean, comfortable and washable cushions, flexible trays, portability and ease of use as an overall unit.

High Chairs For Babies – Materials
These high chairs for babies in UK can either be made of wood or high quality plastic. Parents should check the quality standard to verify whether the chair contains varnishes or colors that might not be suitable for the soft and sensitive skin of toddlers.

Safety should not be sacrificed at any cost. Wooden chairs are extremely durable and can be used for a very long time. A baby high chair can be cleaned with normal soap and water and is resistant to damage caused by moisture. Wooden chairs don’t have cushioned seats, which can be cumbersome to clean, and most often than not, crumbs get stuck in the seats.

The height of the chairs can be adjusted and most chairs have 3 to 6 height options. The width and reclining positions can also be adjusted as the child grows up. It is better to buy chairs, which can be folded easily since it benefits storage and transportation. In addition, chairs with detachable trays are more logical since these chairs can be used with tables once the child is old enough to eat at the table. That way you don’t have to get rid of the chair after a couple of years.

Plastic high chairs for babies are equally easy to clean, very handy to fold up and store or transport and have seats, which can be removed and cleaned very easily. Washable chairs or chairs that can be wiped are a must, and parents must verify whether the seats can be thoroughly cleaned. There are a number of good chairs in the market. One type of chair that is very convenient has a vinyl seat that can be easily washed.

A high chair that can be used as an infant feeding chair, chair booster and youth chair is a good choice. Chairs that have seamless edges help to make cleanup easy, and the foam seat doesn’t absorb dirt and food. Chairs that have an extremely comfortable recliner that babies can relax in after a meal may help a child fall asleep. Highchairs with multiple reclining positions and height adjustments are easily available in the market and definitely increase usability.

High Chairs For Babies – Boosters
Booster seats are necessary add-ons once the child starts to experiment with his or her arms and legs. Toddlers are an impatient lot and they must be secured firmly to their chairs while being allowed adequate space for free movement. Booster seats have comfortable belts that prevent the child from tipping over or falling from the chair. Booster seats also allow children to sit at the same height as the rest of the family at meals and parents can feed their babies while having dinner themselves.
High chairs for babies must have a compact design, which looks good while also being loaded with important amenities like smoothly navigable wheels, easy to use brakes, smooth adjustments, adequately large trays and sturdy handles.

Look for a high chair with comfortable and secure seats, trustworthy straps, comfortable armrests and most importantly a sleek and modern design that enables the chair to be folded up easily so that it takes up very little storage space.

Baby  High Chair Benefits

An included infant seat pad and 3-position seat recline make this high chair ideal for beginning eaters, while the eight different height options mean your child join you at the table, no matter how high or low it is. You can easily move it around, even from room to room.

Another highlight: the tray. Choose from our fantastic range of wooden, portable, and folding high chairs, plus table seats and seat harnesses. In terms of practicality, height-adjustable models make for good choices, as they allow parents to seat babies at different tables. Furthermore, convertible "three-in-one" types offer versatility, turning into seats as toddlers grow, while portable types travel easily.  Two large, easy-to-access buttons fold the seat in half and it stands alone for convenient storage. Top Baby High Chairs in UK Reviews

Baby Bjorn high chair: This unique, safe, efficient, easy-to-clean, easy-to-assemble, no-nonsense high chair really has it all without having anything extra to get in the way of how simply perfect it is. Don't listen to all the reviews (especially the ones that are 5+ years old - designs change) about the back cushion falling off (it doesn't) and the tray not attaching for transporting it. This was very easy to put together. While perhaps not as much of a space saver as the Mamas and Papas Pixi (below), I love that you can take one row of legs off the Poppy and it becomes either a) a “low chair,” for people with small kids tables (ahem, me), and/or b) a cool looking big kid’s chair (below), which can be used for years to come (trust me, extra kid’s chairs ALWAYS come in handy). Beginning from the time your child is about six months old until they are three years (or up to 38" tall), you will love the straightforward features of this chair.

While the tray doesn't snap on when carrying it all you do is put one of the straps that are used to fasten it to a chair around the tray tightly and it holds it in place. Everything snapped into place with good instructions. I love that the highback of the chair lays back and that's usually how I get the baby out of the chair. The buckle is a five point harness so I know they're safe if I'm doing things around the kitchen and can't sit right next to them. The buckle also has the option to just be a lap belt.

OXO Tot Sprout: It came with a few more pieces than I thought it would but assembly was not hard at all. the tray is not a solid piece, but rather two main parts clipped together, containing a spring mechanism that is part of the adjustment mechanism (enables you to adjust how near to your child the tray is - 3 positions - or easily remove it, all one handed). The adjustability is great. The OXO Tot Sprout highchair is a thing of style and beauty, a highchair that converts into a child dining chair and that’s so beautifully made it deserves to be called a piece of furniture. Solid and well manufactured, the Sprout comes in a great choice of colours and it can be converted by removing the tray, crotch post and harness to allow an older child to sit at the table. The instructions were not that clear, however, it was self explanatory on how to assemble.

What isn't is that the tray is not sealed, so I can envisage water and food seeping in. With wooden legs and a superbly designed plastic seat and tray, this highchair is a real find. Suitable for children from six months to five years the seat height and footrest can be easily adjusted for height and depth and you don't need any tools to do so. Once I had it built I was so impressed with it. You cannot dunk the tray in the sink as doing so would flood the internals with water, which I can imagine would take forever to properly dry out.

The Sprout is not ideal for small homes as it doesn’t fold, but does have a small footprint as a space saving grace. I tried it out with my daughter, 6 months, with the sticker still on the tray. So cleaning has to be limited to wiping with a cloth. If you can afford it and have space, this is a hard model to beat.

Newborn Baby Bathing Tips in Simple Words

How often should I bathe My just born baby? Bathing a newborn baby is quite an event for first time parents and often for the first few times parents feel a little nervous giving their baby a bath. A question many new parents wonder is how often should I give my newborn a bath underlying this question are two other questions. Can you bath your baby too often and how often is enough to keep a newborn clean and healthy.

Let us look at the beliefs that underlie these questions. There are people who believe that a baby needs to be bathed every day. The belief is that you can never be too clean and so daily bathing is important. However for a baby this is not necessarily true, the human skin has natural oils that prevent infection and also chafing that is caused by everyday dirt and clothing. Too much bathing removes these oils and cause an increase in irritation. Also water and cleanser can actually damage the skin if they are used too frequently. If you do bathe your baby every day it is important to use a mild soap or cleanser designed specifically for use with babies to protect the natural oils on the little one s skin from being removed.

Having recognized this point remember that it is also important that a baby s skin be kept clean to prevent infection or irritation. The face and diaper areas of skin are the places that are most likely to become dirty. It is these areas of the baby s body that need to be washed regularly whenever soiling has taken place If this is done then daily bathing is not necessary. There are no hard and fast guidelines as to how often a newborn should be bathed. If the baby is clean then a giving a bath every other day is perfectly adequate. When you do bath your baby remember that a baby s skin is delicate and make sure the water is not too hot. A tepid temperature is quite warm enough for a baby even though you personally may enjoy a hot bath. Many babies enjoy a bath and are soothed and relaxed after their bath time and more likely to sleep afterward.

Most babies and toddlers enjoy getting wet and splashing around in the bath tub while others may not Being prepared to make your child s experience a safe one is really important Here are 3 Bath Time tips

  • Turn up the heat make sure the bathroom is a nice temperature preferably 70-75 degrees. We all know how uncomfortable it is for us to get out of the shower and its cold. We re used to it but babies on the other hand are not You can also take a nice shower right before you give your baby a bath so the bathroom is nice and warm.
  • Make sure you have everything in the bathroom that you need prior to bath time. Keep them within reach so you can give baby all the attention and care that is needed It is not safe to leave any child in the bathroom unattended until they reach a responsible age and can bathe themselves. Making a bath time cubbie with all of your baby bath items is also helpful. That way all of the appropriate supplies are on hand.
  •  Be sure to test the temperature of the bath water. Some baby bath tubs come equipped with a thermometer or a color indicator that lets you know if the water is too warm. Also as a rule of thumb put the cool water in first then add the hot water. Starting with hot water first can cause your tub can retain the heat and can burn your baby. For the babies and toddlers that seem to have a hard time you may want to provide them with something special that gives them incentive to get ready for bath time

Safety  Tips For Baby Bathing

The first and most important rule is this: Never, ever leave your baby unsupervised, even for a minute. Give your baby a sponge bath until his umbilical cord has fallen off. (If he's been circumcised, wait until that heals, too.) After that, he'll be ready for a baby bathtub. A baby bath doesn't necessarily need to be done in a tub of water. Keep all medicines in containers with safety caps. Children can drown in less than an inch of water.

Choose one that has a contoured design or an internal sling that prevents your baby from sliding. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends sponge baths until the umbilical cord stump falls off — which might take up to three weeks. Remember, however, that these caps are child-resistant, not childproof, so store all medicines and cosmetics high and out of reach in a locked cabinet. So gather all the supplies (soap, towel, clean diaper, clean clothes, etc.) you'll need ahead of time, and keep at least one hand on your baby while he's in the water. Never use a bath seat -- these can tip over when the suction cups fail, trapping your child underwater. If you'd like to give your baby a sponge bath, you'll need. Don't keep toothpaste, soaps, shampoos, and other frequently used items in the same cabinet. If the doorbell or phone rings and you feel you must answer it, scoop up your baby in a towel and take him with you. Believe it or not, there’s plenty to learn in the tub. When baby graduates to the big tub, Expert recommends using adhesive stickers or bath mats in the bottom of your tub to keep your mobile kids from sliding around (those mats and stickers come in cute designs, too!).Once kids emerge from the tub, Medline Plus suggests putting down a bath mat outside of the tub and teaching your child to stay seated in the tub.

Instead, store them in a hard-to-reach cabinet equipped with a safety latch or locks. Experiment with different bathing products. Tickle your little one’s senses by trickling water gently onto his belly — he’ll probably giggle with pleasure. They also likes to tell parents to use bath seats for younger kids because it helps keep them upright – and to always keep an eye on their kids. If your newborn still has the umbilical cord stump stick to simple sponge baths every few days so it stays dry and clean. Some children have more sensitive skin or dry skin; some children have eczema or different allergies or get more or fewer baths than a child in another family.

Pour a little water near him (his wide-eyed gaze will let you know he’s captivated), or teach him a lesson in cause-and-effect by showing him how to kick the water and create a splash (just always watch to be sure he seems to enjoy your actions). Don’t forget a play-by-play as you wash him — name his little body parts as you suds them (and then kiss them each, of course). He’ll be learning a tub-full of words before you know it! Babies don’t get very dirty, with the exception of their diaper area, and under their chins where spit-up tends to trickle, so pay careful attention to those parts. Use a trial-and-error period to find the right soap or cleansing solution that works for your child and does not cause any irritation.“What works with one child will cause itching in another one. You can skip the soap: some lukewarm water—not hot—is really all you need.
